(a) On your or your wife's birthday and on your wedding anniversary, mix some raw milk with water in your bathing tub. It will dissolve all kinds of differences between husband and wife.

(b) If one feels that warmth is diminishing in marital life then both husband and wife should try to go for an outing during rain. It will solve the problem.

(c) If a lady feels that her husband is having an extra-marital affair then early in the morning when she comes face to face with her husband, she should touch her forehead with her middle finger and recite her husband?s name silently.

(d) If you feel that expenses are increasing uncontrollably then just throw a few sweet biscuits for birds on your roof.

(e) If you are disturbed by nightmares, keep some iron plate or knife below your bed sheet.

(f) Never live in a house facing south. But if you do have a south-facing house, undertake the following remedies:

(1) Fix copper nails on the south gate.

(2) Feed sabut moong to a goat frequently.

(3) If possible, donate a goat to a person who needs its milk.

Gau-grass

Gau-grass can be defined as giving a portion of your daily food to a cow, crow or a dog. A cow is a karaka of Venus, which as we all know represents wealth and wife according to Vedic Astrology. Venus is the Lord of the 2^nd House (wealth) and the 7^th House (wife), according to Lal Kitab Kundli. So giving a part of your meal to a cow will appease Venus.

Secondly, crow is a karaka of Saturn, which according to Kal Purush Kundli is the owner of the 10^th House (profession) and 11^th House (gains). Feeding crows appeases Saturn.

Third and not the least, a dog represents Ketu. Ketu is also the karaka of son or progeny. Feeding street dogs ensures the well-being of children and progeny.

Note: If a couple is not able to conceive then the best remedy for them is to feed street dogs on Sunday mornings, before sunrise. It will appease Lord Ketu.

Lal Kitab guidelines for donating or gifting things associated with planets

It is a general rule that if a planet is exalted or well placed in the horoscope, the Karak objects of those planets should not be donated or gifted. On the other hand, accepting gifts of these planets is considered auspicious. If the planet is debilitated or badly placed in the horoscope then the Karak objects of such planets can be gifted or donated, but should not be accepted as gifts or as donations. Ganesha provides the details:

SUN
Sun gets exalted in the 1st House, therefore one should not gift or donate wheat, copper or jaggery. Sun gets debilitated in the 7th House and gets weak in the 8th House. Gifting or donating things associated with Sun will prove fruitful. One thing which should be kept in mind is that donating the Karak objects of Sun should not be done during morning or evening time. This would weaken the Sun. One should donate at mid-day when the Sun is strong.

MOON
If Moon gets exalted in:
2nd House- one should not gift silver, milk or rice etc.
4th House- same as for Moon in the 2nd House.
6th House- arranging free distribution of water or milk will be inauspicious.
Moon gets debilitated in the 8th House. So things associated with Moon can be donated but should not be accepted as gifts.

MERCURY
Mercury gets exalted in the 6th House. So one should not gift things associated with Mercury like flowers, things made of glass, musical instrument etc.
Mercury gets debilitated in the 12th House. So gifting the above items will always be fruitful.

JUPITER
4TH House: Should not donate or gift books, gold etc. This could result in problems in education.
7th House: One should not gift new clothes to any sadhu or saint.
10th House: When Jupiter is placed in the 10th House and Moon aspects Jupiter from the 4th House then a person should not donate for the construction of any religious place. By doing so he might get involved in false allegations.

VENUS
Venus gets debilitated in the 6th House. One can gift clothes, cosmetic items, perfumes etc.
12th House: Venus gets exalted in the 12th House, therefore none of the above items should be gifted.

SATURN
Saturn gets debilitated in the 1st House so gifting liquor, things made of leather, donating cement etc. for any religious place would be auspicious. Drinking free liquor will have an adverse effect.
8th House: If a person constructs a Dharamshala for free stay for travelers, it might make him homeless.

RAHU
Rahu is considered inauspicious in the 1st 2nd 5th 7th and 9th Houses. Therefore one should not accept any gift of electrical equipments, ivory or lead.

KETU
Ketu is considered inauspicious in 3rd 6th and 8th Houses. Therefore one should not accept anything like banana or dogs as pets. They can be gifted though.

Raksha Bandhan A promise to protect from all evils

Usually, it is men who are considered more powerful, strong, sturdy and muscular then women. However, during Raksha Bandhan, it is women who take the initiative to protect their brothers from all the evils and adversaries in life. The bond of protection Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival, which invigorates the brother-sister emotions.

The full moon day in the month of Shravan is observed as Raksha Bandhan. On this day, the sisters tie a sacred thread or raksha sutra on the wrists of their beloved brothers in order to protect them from all dangers. In fact, it is the day when brother and sister express their deep love and affection for each other. Similarly, the priests too do the same to their religious clients (yajman) and the subjects tie the 'raksha sutra' on the wrists of the kings all with a view to protecting them from all the evils.

It is believed that the custom started after an incident mentioned in the Mahabharata. Once Shri Krishna sustained injury on his wrist by a sharp weapon. At that time, Draupdi tore the loose end of her sari and tied that around Shri Krishnas wrist without even giving a second thought. Shri Krishna accepted it as 'raksha sutra' and when Draupdi was in process of being stripped off her clothes by Duhsashan in the darbar of Duryodhan, Sri Krishna protected her from extreme disgrace by supplying her an endless sari.

During the Mughal period, Rani Karnavati, the mother of Maharana Vikramaditya of Mewar, sent a Rakhi to emperor Humayun in order to get his help and protection from the impending attack on Mewar by the rulers of Malwa and Gujarat. Humayun responded readily and defeated the rulers of Malwa and Gujarat, protecting the safety and security of Mewar.

There is another instance of significance of Rakhi during the reign of Jahangir. In Rajasthan, there was a continual hostility between two principalities. Taking advantage of this disunity between them, the Mughal army started military expedition against one of them and the other king was also preparing to help the Mughals by mobilizing his army. At this, the first king sent Rakhi to the other king who was going to help the Mughals. It was then that this king attacked the Mughal army instead and the two united armies defeated the Mughals and remained united for ever.

Puranas too depict few instances of Raksha Bandhan. Once there was a war between the Gods and the demons, which continued for 12 years in which the demons captured the kingdom of heaven. The defeated Gods roamed hither and thither like beggars and passed a precarious life. Indra, the king of Gods went to Brihaspati, the preceptor of God. He narrated how he and other Gods were neither safe nor was there any way of coming out of here. Under these circumstances, there was no other alternative than wage war against the demons who had repeatedly defeated him. Please advise some way-out. This conservation was being heard by Goddess Indrani. She said:Please do not get scared. I will do whatever is necessary to get rid of this danger. This day was the Shravan Purnima. Early in the dawn Saehi Devi took one sacred thread and after the Brahmins uttered the holy invocation, she took it and tied around the right wrist of Indra and told him to engage in war against the demons. As the sacred thread was purified by the holy mantra, it became powerful and protected the Gods against all evils and this vanquished the demons. The holy mantra reads thus:

Yena Baddho Balee Raajaa
Daanabendra Mahaavala;
Tenatwaamabhibadhnaami
Rakshe Maachala-Maachalah.

This is the Vedic form of the Raksha Bandhan mantra. Since time immemorial, this mantra is being chanted by the Brahmins when they tie Rakhis around the wrists of the people. The same mantra is chanted by the brothers and sisters to protect the life and take responsibility of each other. On this day, the Brahmins are offered money and new clothes, and brothers present their sisters who tie them a Rakhi with money. This is the day of pure and innocent love between siblings.

Every house is cleaned two days before the Purnima and the hearth and fireplaces are besmeared. Sumptuous food and tasty sweets are prepared. Pooja is performed for Lord Hanuman and forefathers, as they are offered flowers, incense sticks, rice, fruits, coconuts and sweets.

In Bengal, the Jhulan Utsav starts five days prior to Purnima day and culminates on the day of Purnima. The idols of Krishna and Radha are placed in a swing and the women sing songs on the love-plays of Radha and Krishna. In the houses of the rich, the classical musical programmes are held for these six days and Krishna and Radha are worshipped.

It is believed that the Shivlinga or the phallus form of Lord Shiva at the Amarnath cave of ice accomplishes its full form by nature's process. A pair of white pigeons are seen from time immemorial. Legend has it that when Lord Shiva was narrating the story of immortality to Devi Parvati, she could not listen to the complete story as she fell asleep while the pair of white pigeons heard the full story. It is said that since that time pigeons have become immortal and appear before the holy devotees of Lord Amarnath on the day of Shravan Purnima i.e. Raksha Bandhan day. On this occasion, saints and other holy men offer holy sticks to Lord Amarnath after they wore worshipped with religious rites and rituals at Sri Nagar and carried to the cave of Amarnath.

Raksha Bandhan falls on 24^th of August this year. It is important to note that Bhadra is till 9:21 hrs. on Tuesday morning. Purnima will remain till 22:35 hours. Auspicious time for celebrating Rakhi is after 9:21 IST.

These Mahadashas are widely used all over the world. Although some astrologers may use a different Ayanamsha or method, they also follow this one. Shubh Grahas (in descending order): Shukra, Guru, Shubh Budh, Shubh Chandra.
Ashubh Grahas (in ascending order): Ashubh Budh, Ashubh Chandra, Ravi, Shani, Mangal.

Rahu and Ketu: They are malefic planets, but they do not have a Lordship of any House, and hence the above rule is not applicable. But, it is observed that Rahu may misguide a native leading to some losses. Whereas, Ketu gives no such result.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto: They do not have a Lordship, but they do bear some results in their Nakshatra swami dasha as per their relations with the Nakshatra swami.

It is observed that sometimes a native may feel that he/she has something major missing in his/ her life. This may indicate the absence of proper dasha in his/her entire lifetime, which will invariably lead to unhappiness.
This may be true to some extent.

Generally, a natal chart is likely to have 4 distinct positive dashas -
(1) Chandra or Budh in childhood.

Nag Panchami - protects you from venomous elements for 7 generations

In the land of snake-charmers - India, Nag Panchami is a festival, which is observed in major parts of the country. Celebrated on 'Panchami' or the fifth lunar day of the bright fortnight in the holy month of Shravan, this festival celebrates the worshipping of serpents or 'Naag' with white lotuses. People make snakes out of clay, giving them different forms and colours. These serpent models are placed on a dais and offered milk. In some parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, there are permanent temples of Serpent-Gods and a special pooja is performed with pomp and grandeur. There is a special importance of snake-charmers too on this day, as they are offered milk and money. Digging of earth is strictly forbidden on this day. In West Bengal, the Hindus worship 'Devi Manasha' with 'Ashta Naag', the Snake-Goddess on this tithi.

Naag Panchami Vrat or fast is observed on the Panchami of bright half of the month of Shravan. According to Garuda Puran, paintings of 'Naag' should be drawn on either side of the entrance (of the home) and worshipped. This is also known as 'Bhitti Chitre Naag Puja'. Women offer food, laddoos and kheer (typical dish made with the mixture of rice, milk and sugar) to Brahmins. Similar food is also offered to snakes and snake charmers.

There are many stories behind the observance of Naag Panchami. The story mentioned below may interest you!

Once upon a time there lived a peasant who had two sons and one daughter. One day, while the peasant was ploughing the field, the plough ran over three baby snakes, eventually killing them. On seeing the death of her sons, the mother serpent lamented her sons' death and decided to take revenge on the peasant. In the middle of the night, when the peasant and his family were asleep, the mother-serpent entered their house and bit the peasant, his wife and two sons. As a result, all of them died except the daughter. Next morning mother-serpent again entered the house to kill the peasant's daughter. She was very intelligent and hence, to propitiate the mother-snake offered her a bowlful of milk, and with folded hands requested her to forgive her father for the death of her beloved sons. She welcomed the serpent and asked it to forgive her parents. Mother serpent was very pleased by this gesture and brought back to life the peasant, his wife and two sons whom she bit the previous night. Also, mother serpent gave blessings with a promise that on Shravan Shukla Panchami, the women who will worship a snake shall be protected for seven generations.

That was the day of Nag Panchami, and since then snakes are worshipped to avoid snake bites. This year, Nag Panchami falls on 14th August. This tithi is also celebrated as 'Kalki Jayanti'. On this special day, people influenced by Kaal Sarpa Dosha of Rahu and Ketu should also worship 'Ashta Naag' with 'Sarpa Sutra' and 'Naag Gayatri' to get rid of ill effects of this Dosha.

The effects of SATURN & remedies to nullify them

According to the Astrological thesis, Saturn is described as a serpent, whose head or mouth is Rahu, and Ketu is its tail. If Rahu is posited in earlier Houses than Saturn, the latter becomes a great benefic for the native. However, if the position is otherwise, Saturn throws poisonous or negative results on the native. Further, Saturn never gives malefic effects, if posited in the Houses 2nd,5th,9th,or 12th of Jupiter; whereas Jupiter provides bad results if posited in the Houses of Saturn.

Saturn is considered good if placed in the 2nd ,3rd and 7th to 12th House, while the Houses 1, 4, 5, and 6 are bad for Saturn. Sun, Moon and Mars are its enemies; Venus, Mercury and Rahu are friends, and Jupiter and Ketu are neutral to it. Saturn gets exalted in the 7th House and the 1st House is the House of its debilitation. Venus and Jupiter placed together act like Saturn in that House. Similarly, Mars and Mercury placed in a single House act like Saturn in that House. In the former case, Saturn behaves like Ketu, while in the latter case it behaves like Rahu.

Venus gets destroyed if Saturn is being aspected by the Sun in any horoscope. The aspect of Venus on Saturn causes loss of wealth, but the aspect of Saturn on Venus proves highly beneficial. Collision of Saturn and Moon leads to surgery of the native's eyes. Saturn gives good results, if posited in the House earlier than the Sun.

Saturn can never give malefic results, if posited with the Sun or Jupiter in a single House, but highly adverse results would follow, if posited with Moon or Mars in any House. When saturn is in between Rahu and Ketu in previous House, it will not give bad results.

The third lunar day of the bright fortnight in the month of Sravan is celebrated as Haryali Teej by married women. It is a time of full-fledged rainy season when the earth is covered by lush green trees and grass and the atmosphere is very beautiful. And that is why it is called Haryali Teej. This Vrata should be observed by unmarried girls for getting a suitable and attractive husband. Married woman observe this for everlasting conjugal life. While observing this fast many women do not eat any solid food. Religious minded women do not even drink water. In the morning, after taking a bath, worship Lord Ganesha and Uma Maheswar, chant bhajans throughout the day, and listen to Haritalika Vrata Katha. In the eastern part of our country this day is celebrated as Kajjali Teej.

Legend has it that on this day in ancient times, love-sick Devi Parvati, suffering from acute pangs of separation from her beloved husband Lord Shiva, observed this Vrata and thus united with Lord Shiva. So married women, in order to win the love of their husbands for a happy conjugal life, observe this day with solemnity.

The beauty of nature outside brings joy and pleasure to the minds of the people - men and women alike. Peasants sing the Malhar in fields and ladies sing playfully in every house, especially in Bihar, UP and Rajasthan. They worship Devi Parvati and wear coloured scarfs or sarees called 'lahariya'. The women take out a colourful procession with an idol of goddess Parvati in their hands. Married women should not go to their father's house in the first Sravan month after their marriage. Instead, different types of tasty foods are prepared in their father's houses and sent to their daughter's house. The ladies decorate their hands and palms with 'mehendi' and paint their feet with lac-dye (alta). On this day the wives should religiously follow these three things: (a) avoid deceit, chicanery or hypocrisy with their husbands; (b) shun falsehood and bad behaviour; and (c) never indulge in scandal-mongering and backbiting. On this occasion a special dance programme named Ghumar is staged. It is believed that the custom of wrestling in Rajasthan started on this day during the Pathan period in India. Observe the 'Mangala Gauri Vrat' for conjugal bliss

On every Tuesday in the month of Shravan Goddess Mangala Gauri is worshipped, and the religious observance is known as Mangala Gauri Vrat. The vrat is celebrated by married women, especially newly married, for the good fortune of their husbands and children, and above all for a long and happy conjugal life.

On Tuesday morning, the idol or picture of the Devi Mangala Gauri is placed on a small wooden platform wrapped in a red cloth. A lamp consisting of 16 thick cotton wicks made of wheat flour (atta) is lit with ghee and the devotees meditate by reciting the following mantra:-

Kungkumaaguru liptaangaa
Sarva avaran bhooshitam.
Neelakanthapryaam Gaureem
Vandeham Mangalaahavayaam

Once through with the meditation (Dhyan), Devi Mangala Gauri is worshipped by performing a pooja with Shodoroshopochar rituals.

Various items (as mentioned below) are offered to the Goddess:

Sixteen garlands, sixteen laddus, sixteen different types of fruits, five types of dry fruits for sixteen times, seven types of cereals sixteen times, jeera sixteen times, coriander sixteen times, sixteen leaves of betel, sixteen betel nuts, sixteen cloves, sixteen cardamoms, casket full of various items of cosmetics including sari and sixteen bangles should be offered to the Goddess. It is to be noted that the number sixteen is of prime importance in this pooja.

After completing the rites and rituals, the devotees read / listen to the story behind the Mangala Gauri Vrata.

As the story goes: Long time ago, a merchant named Dharampal lived in a city. He had a very beautiful wife and sufficient wealth. But, they were not at all happy as they had no children. However, by the grace of God they obtained a son who was unfortunately short lived (Alpayu) as he was cursed of death by snake bite at the age of sixteen. But fortunately, he was married before he achieved that age (sixteen) with a girl whose mother observed the Mangala Gauri Vrat. As a result, she was blessed with a daughter who would never face widowhood. So, Dharampal’s son achieved a life span of hundred years. Thus, all the newly married women should perform this pujan and observe this vrat for long, consistent and happy conjugal life. Those who cannot observe fast should at least perform the pooja.

After hearing the above sacred tale, the married women offer 16 laddus to their mother-in-law and sister-in-laws. Thereafter, they offer the same Prasada to a Brahmin. After completing this ritual, devotees perform Nirajan (aarti) of the 16 wick lamps before the Goddess. The next day i.e. on Wednesday, the idol of Devi Mangala Gauri is immersed in a pond or lake. This poojan and vrat is performed for five consecutive years for happiness of the family.

This year, the Mangal Gauri Vrat falls on Tuesdays the 3rd ,10th , 17th and 24th August.

Jaya-Parvati Vrat - penance for happy conjugal life

Jaya Parvati Vrat is a religious observance where married as well as unmarried women fast for six days. This year, the Vrat begins on 23rd July and concludes on 28th July. The vrat is observed across India under different names. In Gujarat, it is widely observed with pomp and grandeur. The six-day festival incorporates in itself many other important religious and social occasions.

On 23rd July this year, the first day of the Vrat, women will observe Pradosh Vrat associated with Raviyog, which assumes greater astrological significance; on the second day Sivasayan Chaturdashi, which is observed widely in Orissa as Shiva Chaturdashi and on the third day Purnima Vrata and Kokila Vrata. Kokila Vrata is widely observed in South India. In Kashmir, the Jwalamukhi Mela too starts on this day. On the fifth day, Ashunya Shayan and Mangal Gauri Vrat is observed with an exception in which men and women, i.e. husband and wife participate in order to get the blessings of God for a long and happy conjugal life. Goddess Mangalagauri is worshipped and the devotees have to remain awake the whole night, which is called Jaya-Parvati Vrat Jagaran. People observe this Vrat for affluence and riches. They must observe strict penance, fast and keep their mind free from evil thoughts and desires. The husband and wife will refrain from conjugal life. The devotees must bathe in pure water mixed with ten aromatic herbs like jatamashi, turmeric, shilajeet, sandal etc., which are to be drenched in water much earlier.

By observing this vrat, unmarried girls get rid of the obstacles in the way of their marriage. The main obstacle, the Bhaumadosh, is removed by this Vrat. Married women can earn the virtue of happy conjugal life and long life of their husbands. On 28th July this year the six-day observance concludes.

Kokila Vrat

A female cuckoo's image is made out of rice paste in this Vrat. But why worship this bird? Our Puranas have a mention of the legend behind this fact.

Goddess Parvati appeared in different forms during different periods by different names. One such form is Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. She chose Lord Shiva as her husband in the Swayamvar. But that was against the wish of her father who disliked Shiva and put him on low esteem. He used to abuse Shiva as barbarian and Lord of evil elements like Bhoot, Pret and Pishach.
Later, Daksha Prajapati arranged one Mahayagna in which he invited all the Gods and Goddesses but not Shiva and Sati. However, Sati decided to attend the occasion in spite of her husband's strong disapproval. Shiva got annoyed. At the altar of Yagna, Daksha received all the Gods and Goddesses and eulogised them, but at the same time abused, censured and spoke ill of Shiva in the strongest language. It was too much for Sati, the devout wife, who could not stand that and jumped in to the sacrificial fire and ended her life.

Shiva came to know about the happenings at Daksha's Yagna and became so furious that he sent of his attendant Veerbhadra to Daksha's Yagna and ordered him to destroy it. The Yagna was in shambles and the Gods who tried to resist Veerbhadra and save the Yagna fell flat with broken limbs and numerous injuries. This made Lord Vishnu appear at the scene. He came to Shiva to pacify him and requested him to bring the deformed Gods to their original form and grace. Shiva responded to Vishnu's request and the Gods got back to their original form. But he did not pardon his wife. Instead he cursed Sati to take the form of a female cuckoo and remain the same for many years. For years the cursed Sati had to stay in the heavenly garden, the Nandan Kanan, and later on she was born as Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas and observed month-long Kokila Vrat. As a result she got back Shiva as her husband.

From that time, Kokila Vrat is in vogue with the belief that if any married woman on the day of Shravan Purnima, worships Kokila's idol bedecked with ornaments and jewellery and offers it to the Brahmin or her superior in-laws, she can earn good fortune with health, wealth, husband and son. As per the legend, at least one married woman of each family should follow this Jaya Parvati Vrat niyam for the safety and prosperity of the entire family.

Last but not the least, this religious practice has achieved immense importance due to the fact that this falls during the chaturmaas.

Guru Purnima - A perfect time to thank your Guru

'Guru' in India, holds a supreme significance. Guru is a person with revered personality, who by his teachings enlightens us. He introduces us to the vast world of knowledge and shuns our ignorance. He teaches us, he guides us, he protects us from all sorts of dangers and sins. Perhaps, that's the reason why Kabir in one of his songs says, that if God and Guru stand side by side, the first adoration and worship should be offered to Guru and then to God. This is because through Guru we can recognise and realize the significance of God.

The full-moon day of the month of Aashaadh is observed as Guru Purnima or Vyas Purnima because on this lunar day (Tithi), Maharshi Veda Vyas, one of the seven immortals, descended to this mortal world. He is called the guru of all gurus, for he not only compiled all the Vedas together and systematically divided it into four parts, viz. - Rig, Sam, Yajur and Atharva, but also created an epic like the Mahabharata. Apart from that he composed 18 Puranas, Upapuranas, Vyas Samhita etc. to teach mankind as to how to lead our lives.

Such a genius and gifted personality is not to be found in the annals of literary history of mankind. We all adore and worship him on this day through our own preceptor, who is regarded to be Maharshi Vyas incarnate. So every devout Hindu worships his/her own guru regarding him as Vyas Dev, our Adiguru. This worship of the preceptor or guru has been running from time immemorial when during the ancient Vanaasram period the disciples residing in their Guru?s house used to learn various Shastras. On this auspicious day the disciples used to worship their guru and offer him honorarium in order to propitiate him and obtain his blessings.

Early in the morning, the devotees or disciples take a bath, wear new clothes and worship the feet of their revered guru and offer him food, money, clothes, ornaments etc. as per the their capacity. Disciples of all Hindu religious orders ? Vaishnav, Shaiva or Shakta observe this day because in their guru the disciple finds Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswar and the Parabrahma, i.e. Supreme Soul. This is what is mentioned in the following sloka from Guruvandana:

Gururbrahmaa Gururvishnuh
Gurudevo Maheswara;
Gurursaakshaat Parambrahma
Tasmai Sreegurave Namah

If the Guru Dev is not alive, his portrait or picture should be worshipped with all other rites and rituals. It is pertinent to mention here that our shastras have taught us that our prime preceptors are our parents. And so father, mother and elders too should be worshipped along with the guru and their blessings obtained on this auspicious day. The composition of Maharshi Veda Vyas should be read collectively on this great day.

This year Guru Purnima falls on Sunday, the 25th of July.

According to Hindu calender year, Navaratri is celebrated four times in a year:
1. Chaitra or Basant Navaratri
2. Ashadh or Varsha Ritu Navaratri

These are further divided into Prakat or Open Navaratri and Gupt or Secret Navaratri. From the above mentioned Navaratri, Chaitra and Aswin are Prakat Navaratri; while Ashadh and Magh Navaratri are called Gupt Navaratri. Gupt Navaratri is very powerful and yield quick results, if any one chants either of these mantras with specific purposes secretly. Rules are simple. A person has to perform a 'Panchopar Puja' before Goddess Durga and communicate one's wishes and surrender oneself totally. Chant the mantras at least 108 times before an earthen lamp. Recitations of mantra can be done from either of these Holy Navaratri days. Best days to begin are 13th July, 2010 - the Ratha Yatra Day or 19th July, 2010 - Bhadalya Navami. Here, it should be noted that Deva Sayani Ekadashi falls on 21st July, 2010 after which no religious sanskars can be performed for next four months i.e. upto 17th November, 2010 - Devathan/Prabodhoni Ekadashi.

RATH YATRA - A journey towards salvation

The 'Chariot festival' or Ratha Yatra literally means journey by chariot. This festival is observed across India with pomp and gaiety. Lord Vishnu's incarnations such as Lord Krishna or Jagannath or even Lord Ram's idol is placed on a chariot drawn by the 'dastus'. It is brought to different destinations like Goddess Lakshmi's temple, Radhika's temple or Sita Devi's. Eventually, it goes to Puri to Gundicha temple where the wooden idol of Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra are made.This Ratha Yatra starts on the second lunar day of bright fortnight in the month of Aashaadh (Sukla daitiya) and continues for eight days. Among all the chariot festivals, on this occasion the foremost festival is observed in Puri, one of the four greatest places of pilgrimage in India. Here three chariots, one each of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and of their beloved sister Subhadra Devi are brought on the streets of Puri and drawn by thousands of devotees who converge on the occasion form all over the globe. The most important characteristics of this festival of Puri is that people of all castes, right from Brahmin to Chandal have the right to draw the chariot. This chariot proceeds slowly in the morning after the performing the Puja and other rituals. The king of Puri, Gajapati, sweeps the street with a golden broom. The chariots are covered with different colored clothes. They have different names - Lord Jagannath's hariot is named 'Nandighosh', Lord Balaram's 'Taladhwaj' and Subhadra Devi's chariot is called 'Darpadalana'. The Nandighosh's colour is red and yellow; the Taladhwaj's colour is red and green while the Darpadalana's colour is red and blue. Though Devi Subhadra is worshipped in Puri, but in Hindu mythology, she is not called a goddess. Only in Mahabharata we find that she is the beloved sister of his two loving elder brothers.Another interesting feature of the idols of Puri is that unlike the idols of Gods and Goddesses of all the temples of India, they have more resemblance with tribal totems. The main temple of Puri was built in the 12th century during the reign of the king Anantavarman Chodganga. After that, another 120 temples were built later.Before the journey begins, the chariots are placed in proper array - first Lord Balaram's chariot, which is 44 feet high, then Devi Subhadra's chariot, which is 43 feet high and at last Lord Jagannath's, which has a height of 45 feet. Throughout the day the chariots proceed slowly towards Gundicha temple and reach there in the evening.The three deities rest there for eight days and on the ninth day, their return starts in the morning, after performing Puja and other rituals. On the day before the chariots are placed in right array by turning their faces towards the streets. This return journey is called in Oriya as 'Bahuda Jatra, which starts in the morning and terminates before the Jagannath temple. The deities are kept on the chariots and are worshipped till Ekadashi or eleventh lunar day, after which they are again placed in the temple in their respective places.Another feature of Puri's Jagannath temple is that the world's largest kitchen is made outside the temple, where about 25,000 devotees take the Mahaprasad, or cooked food offered to God, daily and during the festival the number surpasses one lakh. 14,000 men work for proper manning the kitchen and other arrangements. And around 6,000 priests are engaged for worshipping etc. year after year without interruption. This is the national festival of Orissa spanning for 10 days in which lakhs of devotees congregate from every corner of the globe. Another most interesting feature of Puri's kitchen is that the Brahmins share food in the same 'thali' with people of any caste. The pundits on sociology say that it is the remnant of Buddhism, which negates any caste division and as the temple of Puri was once a Buddhist shrine. This feature is found nowhere in India and the priests say that in Sreekshetra, i.e. Puri, there is no caste bar and all his offspring are equal in the eye of Lord Jagannath.Each year the three chariots are built with wood and there is not a single piece of iron used in it. The wood is collected on Vasant Panchami day and the work starts on Akshay Tritiya and the work of the three chariots is completed a few days before the Ratha Yatra.The Jagannath temple is a piece of art and sculpture. The temple is 214 feet high and resembles the Shiva temple or Lingaraj temple of Bhubaneswar. It is believed that previously the outer side of the temple was full of humorous figurines. But in the later period these were covered with line and sand and different design was built. The Pundits say that it is was done to obliterate the Buddhist remnants after the waning of Buddhism in India.It is pertinent to note here that unlike the chariots, the building of idols of three deities does not take place every year but once in 8 to 19 years in the month of Aashaadh with extra days in the calendar. That year, the bodies of three idols are built and this occasion is called 'Navakalevar' meaning new body. And a festival is observed on this occasion and the old idols are buried at Koyli Baikuntha a place inside the temple boundary.This year, the Ratha Yatra begins on 13th of July and concludes on 22nd July 2010. This period is one of the most auspicious periods to begin all auspicious functions and perform all auspicious rituals.

Aadya:- This Naadi has Vaat dosh & hence, if both the partners have this Naadi, the child born to them will have the same dosha, will experience some health problems in early childhood.

Madhya:- This Nadi has Pitta dosh & hence, if both the partners have the Naadi, their child will have the same dosh & may suffer from a serious illness such as jaundice at the time of birth. It may also give rise to a situation, wherein the child is required to be kept in an incubator.

Antya:-This Nadi has Cough dosha. If both the partners have this Naadi, their child too will have the same dosha, & may suffer from health problems during the early days of life.

According to the table mentioned above, it is clear that though the Naadis are different,if the Sukshma Naadi has the same combination, a female may suffer from health problems while conceiving or during her pregnancy. A new way of Match-Making

The Kundali matching or match-making in general is done through various ways. Some people even use numerology for appropriate match-making. In practice, astrologers tally an Ascendent relation between

Mars & Venus,
Sun & Moon and
Jupiter

Further, they refer Navmansha Kundli as well as the Dashas. They also study the Moon signs. These studies make it easier for the astrologers to find out who will be more dominant of the two and so they can guide their clients accordingly. As per my study, we have to find out whether a horoscope is positive or negative.

To find out the same, we have to work in the following way:

(1)Find out how many male planets are in male Rashi. Give them one point each.

Male planets are:- Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Pluto.
Male Rashis are:- 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 &11.

(2)Find out how many female planets are in female Rashi. Give them one point each.

Female planets are:- Moon, Venus & Neptune
Female Rashis are:- 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12.

(3)For Mercury:- If it is placed with a male planet, consider it as a male; if it is with a female planet, consider it as a female.

(4) For Rahu & Ketu:- Consider them as per the Rashi Lords.

If there is any male planet in female Rashi, give it a zero point. Same rule is applicable for a female planet when it is placed in male Rashi. Now, calculate the points and find out who scores more – male or female. If the points of both the candidates are the same, then refer the Ascendent i.e. it is a male or female Rashi. Samudaya or Sarvashtakvarga

A table consists of 12 Houses and 7 planets i.e. 84 squares prepared by putting dots and zeroes and adding them together, which is known as Sarvashtakvarga. The total benefics should be written in each House along with planets and zodiac signs. Planets which are placed in their own sign, mooltrikona sign or exalted sign are strong, but if they have less than 28 benefic dots, they give negative results. Similarly, if the planets are placed in 6th, 8th or 12th House and have more than 28 benefic dots, they give benefic results.

For each house, minimum number of benefic dots determined are given below:

The 27 'Nakshatras' in the Hindu System of Astrology

The 'Nakshatras' or constellations form the most important element of the Hindu Astrology and 'Muhurtha' streams of knowledge. Without these, our knowledge would be incomplete.

Nakshatra means 'something that never decays'. It has been referred to as 'constellation' or 'asterism' and also at times as 'lunar mansions' by astrologers from the west. Among these, the word 'asterism' comes closest to the meaning of 'Nakshatra'.

The Nakshatras represent a cluster of stars. For instance, the first Nakshatra in sequence known as 'Ashwini' is made up of three stars, which looks like a Horse. Hence the name 'Ashwini', which is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Ashwa', which means a Horse. The Horse thus becomes the symbol of this asterism. As the Horse represents physical power and stamina, those born in this Nakshatra are always active, tenacious, dynamic and full of energy.

How to co-relate the Nakshatras to the planets in an individual?s Horoscope

The sky is considered as a stage and the planets are said to be the players on the stage. The screen behind the players represents the backdrop of the sky, which keeps on changing with every new act in the play. The Nakshatras form the designs on this screen. The situation is similar to a singer singing on the stage while projections on the screen behind him can be changed with different colours or scenes, which the director of the program decides. When we talk of the Moon in an individual?s birth chart, the rising asterism nearest to the degrees of Moon at the time of one?s birth in the backdrop of the sky, will be considered as 'Janma Nakshatra', or the Asterism in which ones Moon is placed.

They guide us to the first letter of an infant?s name at the time of 'Naamkaran' or naming ceremony of an infant. The Nakshatras also guide us during matchmaking. They are help us find how each planet in the horoscope will function. This forms the study of another domain of astrology known as 'Nakshatra Paddhaty'.

Janma Nakshatra

The Moon placed in a particular Nakshatra decides the mental bearings of the Native they would be, and if they are not in required levels, then the remedial measures of the Moons Nakshatra Lord Owner have to be undertaken for pacifying and strengthening the Moon so as to decrease the malefic effects and bring an increase in the benefic one.

In Astrology, there are umpteen uses of the Nakshatras for gauging celestial influences on human lives. This can produce many hard paperback volumes if one decides to write a thesis on it.

108 Beads of the Japa Mala

Those who are aware of the Hindu rosary or the 'Japa Mala' for counting of Mantras must be aware that there are 108 beads in the mala, and it has a staunch reason behind it.
A circular pizza may be compared to the sky. Cutting a pizza into 27 equal parts would cover a span of 360 degrees correspondingly in the sky which we address as the zodiac. Each Nakshatra too would thus measure an arc of 13.20 degrees in the Zodiac.

The ancient Indian astrologers have always preferred precision in their studies. They have further subdivided this arc of 13.20 degrees into four parts of 3.20 degrees each known as 'Padas'. So we now have 27 x 4 = 108 Padas. This is the reason for 108 beads in the 'Japa Mala'. It is a belief that when a person recites one full mala of 108 mantras, he asks for forgiveness and also requests for blessings from each part of the zodiac which influence every small and big affair of human existence. In short, asking for grace from the Omnipresent, Omniscient and the Omnipotent Lord under whose domain the whole zodiac is contained. In same way, in the scriptures, the Nakshatras too are considered to be divine beings, worthy of being worshipped through the Lords of these Nakshatras who are the Navgrahas or the nine planets in Hindu Astrology.

In other words, we have 27 Nakshatras with four charans each. Multiply 27 x 4 and you get 108. So when you take 108 names of the Lord, you are practising remedial measures for every planet in your chart, because all the Lords of these charans are nothing but manifestations of the Supreme itself. 108 Padas mean all the degrees of the Zodiac covered. By taking 108 names of the Lord, you have paid obeisance to all the portions of this Universe.

The Zodiac in Astrology consists of the following:

1. The Zodiac of 360 degrees divided into 12 parts each of 30 degrees are named as the Zodiac signs in the order- Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces owned by the 7 + 2 = 9 planets, where the seven planets comprise of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn while the other two are shadowy planets (Invisible) called as Rahu, Ketu or the Dragon's Head and the Dragon's Tail respectively in western astrology. They are the Northern and Southern nodes of the Moon.

2. Further, the divisions are followed by the 27 Nakshatras each measuring 13.20 degrees arc of the Zodiac. This is then followed by 108 Charans or Padas as explained above.

For example, in matchmaking the Yonis representation will guide the astrologer as to how well the partners are compatible. Same goes with the Gana 'Rakshasa'. For instance, in matchmaking again the astrologer would see whether the Ganas match or not between the partners and whether the prospective bride and bridegroom have each 'Rakshasa' and 'Dev Gana' then the matchmaker may deny the match because a God and a Demon cannot marry or live happily. Of course, this would be subject to other conditions too.

Lalit Modi is a victim of Rahu-Ketu transit

A lot has been written about the drama and excitement generated around IPL-III, both on and off the field. While the Sachins, Dhonis and Pollards were setting the stadium on fire with their exploits on the field, the likes of Lalit Modi, the beleaguered chairman and commissioner of IPL aka 'Mr. Fall Guy', Sharad Pawar, the president of BCCI aka 'Mr. Negotiator', the BCCI top brass aka 'the Invincibles', and our 'honourable' politicians were exchanging fire outside it.

But despite the conclusion of the third season of IPL with unprecedented celebrations and fireworks in Mumbai and later in Chennai, there is no dousing the controversy that surrounds the suspended Chairman of IPL. Looking at the current string of events and mood at the menacing corridors of BCCI, the future of the man, who has been credited for single-handedly writing the IPL success story, looks bleak.

However, Ganesha, armed with the wisdom of the Vedic Astrology System, has not entirely written Modi off just yet. He believes that the current problems faced by Modi are primarily due to the ongoing Rahu-Ketu transit. And his troubles are likely to become less intensive as soon as the effect of the two malefic planets wears out. Saturn, which is placed in its own sign, is in the 10th House from the natal Moon. The 10th House is the house of career. And this arrangement forms Sash Yoga.

Jupiter is also placed in its own sign. The strong presence of Jupiter and Saturn in his birth chart has made him one of the most effective sports administrators in the history of world cricket. But while the transits of Saturn and Jupiter has helped him prosper, there are other transits that have led to his current downfall.

At present, he is under heavy influence of Rahu-Ketu transit. This is a very difficult phase for him with Rahu conjunct with natal Venus and Ketu's presence in the 8th house from the Sun.

Since Venus is the planet of glory, love, values, urges, social image, creation, attraction, luck, personality and money, the malefic effect of Rahu on Venus has led to unwanted revelations that tarnished his public image. The transiting Ketu is passing through the 8th house from the Sun, the planet of power and authority. Due to this, Modi's position as the chairman and commissioner of IPL has been compromised and he was suspended.

Ganesha feels that he will continue to face enormous difficulties till August this year. And till July 27, his problems will look menacingly insurmountable. However, things will start looking a little less murky from August onwards and the malefic effects of Rahu-Ketu will significantly tone down by the end of August. The positive effects of Jupiter transit from September onwards is likely to bring about a remarkable improvement in his condition. But neither his fighting spirit nor Jupiter's favourable position will help fully reinstate what he has already lost and is about to lose.

In a traditional society like India, birth of a child has always been a priority after marriage. There was a time, when if a woman is not able to conceive immediately after marriage, her in-laws would curse her for not giving an heir to the family. But things have changed with time. Now, educated people prefer to consult a doctor and go through a medical examination to find out if there are any medical reasons for not having being able to conceive. There are cases where the doctors provide reassurance to the couple to stop worrying as there is nothing wrong with them biologically/medically, but still the couple is not able to conceive. This is when astrology comes to the aid of such couples.

After analysing the horoscope of both, the man and the woman, there may be either of the two possibilities:

1.To see whether it is a case of childlessness.

2.To see whether it is a case of delay and not denial of a child birth.

If the horoscope promises the birth of a child, the timing has to be seen from both dasha and transit of the planets. In all such cases, first the horoscope of the man is examined for the possibility of a child and later, the woman's horoscope is examined for the time of conception.

1.The 5th House has retrograde Saturn aspected by Sun. This signifies delay in conceiving a child.

2.Lord of the 5th House, Jupiter with Venus in 10th House is good.

3.In Saptamsha, Saturn, Lord of the 5th House is aspected by Jupiter, which again promises a child.

After coming to a conclusion on the husband's horoscope, similar examination of the wife's horoscope should be done.

1.In the wife's horoscope, 5th House Lord has gone into 12th House. This is not favourable.

2.The 5th House has the aspect of Sun and Venus, which is promising.

3.From Jupiter, Saturn aspects the 5th House along with Mars and Mercury. This is a case of delay, and not denial.

4.In Saptamsha, the 5th House has Ketu but the 5th Lord is with Venus aspected by Jupiter. This too promises of child birth, though delay is possible.

In 1998, husband's Saturn dasha started which is in the 5th House. Moreover, Saturn is also the 5th Lord of Saptamsha. In case of the wife, the antardasha of Venus is aspecting the 5th House and with 5th Lord in Saptamsha.

Mangal Dosha-How Terrible it can be?

Most people believe that Manglik Dosha is dangerous, but it is far from being a fact. There are 12 Houses in a horoscope and if Mars is in the 1st, 2nd (according to some astrologers of south India), 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th House, then is said to be in Mangal dosha. So out of the 12 Houses, there are 6 Houses wherein the effect of Mars can be negative. Hence, the ratio of Mangliks to non-Mangliks is 50:50 and if you exclude 2nd House, it comes out to be 60:40.

In reality, Mars is a planet that makes one bold. It also makes the person dominating, aggressive and quarrelsome. And its presence in the 7th House induces quarrels between a husband and wife. But, just the presence of Mangal Dosha in both horoscopes will not reduce the effect of Mangal dosha. Mars should be present in the same House. Mars, in first House, makes one bold, aggressive and dominating. The person will most likely be short tempered. He will remain tensed more often than not. A tendency to be rash is also seen in such people.

Mars, in second House, makes one acrimonious. And the condition may worsen when he/she is angry. They also lose out on the social and financial fronts on account of this anomaly. Mars aspects the 8th House from here, so it also affects the family and age of spouse.

4th House is the House of comforts and happiness. Mars' presence in this House reduces happiness in marital relations as it aspects the 7th House by its 4th aspect. It also disturbs peace and happiness in the person's domestic life. It may make him/her jealous of his/her brothers or sisters, which normally happens due to his/her spouse.

In the 7th House, Mars' presence is worse than its aspect. Such a person's spouse may suffer from his/her partner's violent streaks. The emotional and sexual needs of the person may also not match his/her partner's. In some cases, it also causes intercaste marriage.

Mars, in 8th House, indicates a short life of the person's spouse. It will kill the bonhomie between the boy's and girl's families and also disturb the peace between their families. As said earlier, Mars' presence in 6 Houses out of 12 causes one to suffer from the negative effect of Mars. Mars will not have the same impact on every person. Moreover, people's belief that Mars Dosha indicates an untimely and accidental death of the partner is not true in every case. This happens only when Mars is afflicted.

Perfect horoscope matching reduces the effect of Mars in life of married couples. It will not entirely nullify the negative effect of Mars but may reduce its effect to some extent. If Venus and Moon are in 2nd House or even one of them is present in the 2nd House, then the effect of Mars reduces to some extent. It is also observed that this does not help every one.

Aspect of Jupiter on Mars on 7th House has its effect too. Jupiter is planet of wisdom and righteousness. And it may alleviate the pain to a certain extent, that is, the problems exist but they remain hidden within the four walls of house. In case of more than two afflictions, even Jupiter may not prove to be advantageous.

It is also said that if Saturn and Mars are present in same House in the partner?s horoscope, it reduces the Mars Dosha. But its effect too is less.

If Rahu and Mars are conjunct and if Mars is the owner of the same House i.e. if Mars is placed in Aries or Scorpio Ascendant or if Mars is placed in the signs of Taurus or Cancer in the 7th House. All these combinations reduce the affliction to some extent but do not nullify it.

Actual reduction of affliction can be done by the matching the horoscopes of boy and girl with respect to the placement of Mars according to Ascendant, Moon and Venus. There are many more factors to be considered while matching the birth charts for marriage.

Budget 2010 is just around the corner and everyone is hoping to get some relief from inflation, in general, during the Union Budget for 2010 to be presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha on 26th February. The common man has a lot to expect from the government in terms of sops and tax cuts. The industry experts are divided over whether our Finance Minister will fulfill the wishes of citizens or not.

Ganesha predicts Budget 2010 with the help of Vedic Astrology.

Ganesha anticipates that this year's Budget will boost the floundering economy by focusing on fixing infrastructure, generating rural employment and providing incentives to sick sectors.

Horoscope of Independent India shows that Sun is in Cancer and transiting Sun is passing through 10th House of Aquarius and is in conjunct with Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury. Here the 10th House also represents the government's natal House.

Also, as Sun is in the Satatarka constellation in 3rd pad and Satatarka represents Rahu on the day of Budget, Government of India is likely to take a strong stance on petroleum and gas products, silver, lead and steel. This budget is likely to have some bad news for home-makers as price of LPG shoots further up. The hike is a certainty as constellations are not supporting the product. The 5th House represents stock market. After budget, there is likely to be a mood of caution at the bourses.

Celebrate Putrada Ekadashi to protect your child from all evil

The eleventh day in the bright fortnight of the month of Paush is observed as ?Putrada Ekadashi?. Women who desire for a son, observe this Vrata. They pray to God and request him to protect their children from all evil.

There is a legend behind the celebration of Putrada Ekadashi. Once there was a man named Suketu. He lived with his wife Saivyaa. They had no children. But the disheartened couple was eager to have a son. Suketu was so depressed that he once decided to commit suicide. With a heavy heart, he left his house and went to a forest to end his life. He walked for miles. With no food or water for a long time, he was exhausted and could walk no more. He then decided to rest under a tree. He was pondering over his hard luck when he heard a Rishi reciting Vedic hymns. Suketu decided to trace the sound.

He reached a beautiful lake, on the banks of which he saw a Brahmin reciting the Vedic hymns. Paying obeisance to the sage, he sat there listening to the hymns. After the Brahmin concluded his recitation, Suketu told the sage why he had come to the forest. The Sage advised him to go back and observe 'Putrada Ekadashi' along with his wife.

Suketu did just as he was told. He went home and observed the Vrata along with his wife Saivyaa, with due solemnity. In course of time, he was blessed with a son. Since then this Vrata has become prevalent in the society.

In the south Indian states, this Ekadashi is known as Vaikuntha Ekadashi. This year the Vrata falls on 28th December. Putrada Ekadashi should be observed by every parent to ensure good health, wealth, happiness and welfare of his/her children.
